Young at Heart? Join The Collaborative for a delightful field trip to tour the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright at nearby Florida Southern College followed by a lovely dining experience at the historic Terrace Hotel.
Our day begins at 8:00 a.m. boarding the bus under the Angel Wing at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. As we drive to Lakeland, Dr. Thorp and Orlando Heart of the City Fellow, Jordan Alexander, will share with everyone the vision, mission, and programs of The Collaborative, followed by a time of Q&A.
We arrive by 10 a.m. at Florida Southern College for our experience of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture.
In 2012, the Florida Southern College Historic District in Lakeland, Florida, was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for being the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world.
Our one hour walking tour begins in the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center. The Center provides a home for the permanent display of photographs, furniture, and drawings depicting Wright’s relationship with the College. The Center also acts as a home for visiting exhibits on loan from various other Wright sites.
From there, an experienced docent, using wireless headphones, describes Mr. Wright’s vision for the campus and the unique method of construction he chose for the site. After leaving the Center we will walk across the campus as the docent tells the story of each of the Wright designed structures, including the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, the Danforth Chapel, and the Usonian House. We will have a chance to explore their beauty from within.
The tour is handicap accessible, and there are plenty of benches along the way. One is welcome to stop and rest, and easily catch up with the tour for the subsequent building.
After the tour, we will take our bus to The Club at Eaglebrooke for a beautiful lunch before heading home, arriving back at First Pres by 3:00 p.m.
$35: includes bus, walking tour admission fee, and luncheon
